Opel brakes are designed to give you total control and safety when on the road. That being said, they may occasionally experience some issues. Common Opel brake problems include brake pedal pulsation, excessive brake noise, grinding and stuck brake calipers. Fortunately, many of these common faults can be repaired with relative ease.
Brake Pedal Pulsation
Brake pedal pulsation is common in Opel vehicles. This problem often occurs due to the development of warped brake rotors. In some cases, impaired suspension components, such as damaged suspension bushings or bad wheel bearings, may also contribute to the issue. Warped rotors can cause uneven braking and can be repaired by replacing the rotors or having them reconditioned. A qualified mechanic should be able to inspect and diagnose the cause of pulsation if other components are found to be in good condition.
Excessive Brake Noise
Noise when braking, such as squealing or screeching, is common in Opel vehicles. This is usually caused by worn-out brake pads. The excess noise comes from metal on metal contact when the brake pads are too thin. Fortunately, this is a relatively easy fix. All four brake pads should be replaced at the same time and inspected to ensure they are properly adjusted.
Grinding usually relates to excessive brake noise as it also is caused by worn-out brake pads. This noise may be more pronounced than regular wear noise, lasting even after releasing the brake pedal. Drivers should replace their brake pads as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Stuck Brake Calipers
Opel vehicles may experience an issue in which the brake calipers become stuck and the brakes are rendered inoperable. This is usually caused by a buildup of rust and corrosion. The caliper must be removed and thoroughly cleaned. Your mechanic may need to install a new caliper guide pin, pad retainer clip or anti-rattle clip as part of the repair.
If you notice any of these common Opel brake faults, it is best to take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for inspection and repair. Many of these issues are simple and inexpensive repairs when caught early on, but can quickly lead to costly repairs if neglected. Taking good care of your vehicle’s brakes ensures your safety and helps you to avoid expensive repairs down the road.
